Members of the Monash community have been recognised in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours for their outstanding contribution to Australian society through teaching, research, innovation and community leadership.
Many Monash staff, alumni, supporters and former colleagues featured in the Honours List, released on 14 June.
Emeritus Professor Alan Trounson AO, from the Hudson Institute for Medical Research, was awarded one of the highest honours - an Order of Australia Officer in the General Division.
Professor Trounson founded the Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISCL) at Monash University and he is now the founding CEO/President of the start-up company Cartherics Pty Ltd, located at Monash's Clayton campus.
We were also delighted to see the following people with connections to Monash awarded an Order of Australia Officer in the General Division (AO):
- Dr Christine Nixon AO, former Deputy Chancellor of Monash University and former Chair of Monash College, for her distinguished contributions to law enforcement, women in policing, and tertiary education
- Professor Ian Freckleton AO QC, former adjunct professor, for his distinguished service to the law, and to the legal profession, across fields including health, medicine and technology.
- Dr Janine Kirk AO, Monash alumna, for her distinguished service to the community through leadership and advisory roles in not-for-profit organisations.
- Ms Suzie Carp AO, Monash alumna, for her distinguished service to medical research, to children, and to the community through leadership roles.
- Professor Geoffrey Metz AO, Monash alumnus and colleague, for distinguished service to medicine, to medical education both nationally and internationally, and to professional medical organisations.
- Mr Peter Ivany AO, alumnus, for distinguished service to the community as a supporter of sporting, arts, film, not-for-profit, and natural science organisations.
- Dr Bridget (Breda) Carty AO, Monash alumna, for distinguished service to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, to education and research, and to the community.
- Mr Ian Hicks AO, Monash alumnus, for distinguished service to the community through philanthropic support for the arts, education and social welfare bodies.
- Professor Howie AO, Monash alumnus, for distinguished service to medicine in the field of orthopaedics, and to professional medical organisations.
