Monash Endorses Suburban Rail Loop As Vital Asset

Monash University

Monash University supports the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL).

The University's largest suburban location offers the advantage of significant space and scale, servicing one of the largest student and staff populations in the country.

The 601 bus route - one of the State's busiest - and 13 other bus lines, service Monash's Clayton campus; but we know our students and staff expect more when it comes to public transport. There is no doubt that a mass transport solution is needed.

The University has advocated for improved public transport to the Clayton campus for decades.

Time after time Monash students and staff have been promised a train line. Finally, a promise is being delivered upon.

Our students and staff have consistently expressed a preference for train travel to Clayton campus over driving.

The SRL will help to address the needs of our students, staff and partners with a fit-for-purpose public service offering.

The SRL Monash station will support more than just Monash University. The Monash Technology Precinct is the largest employment hub outside of the CBD. Employment activity centres that will be serviced by the Monash station include the Victorian Heart Hospital, the Moderna manufacturing site, CSIRO, the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre and the Australian Synchrotron.

As the nation grapples with an ongoing shortage of affordable housing, the SRL will act as a catalyst for property development close to employment and public transport.

Monash University is actively collaborating with the Suburban Rail Loop Authority as construction begins on the Monash station. Close coordination with project teams has been ongoing to ensure that the station's integration aligns with the University's long-term campus and precinct development plans, anticipating future growth and addressing sustainability goals.

We are confident that the SRL will significantly enhance connectivity, drive economic and employment growth, and support long-term development for the Monash community.
