The Bureau of Meteorology has issued several warnings for monsoonal weather across the Top End over the Christmas holiday weekend and is urging all those in the region to plan any travel safely.
The tropical low just west of the Tiwi Islands continues to develop and track towards the coast, and it is expected to cross south of Darwin, near Dundee Beach on Boxing Day.
Whether the system reaches cyclone strength depends on how long it spends over water. Regardless, monsoonal rainfall and storms will impact the Top End in the coming days.
Flash flooding from the heavy rainfall and reduced visibility will impact driving conditions across the Top End and may cut access to rural and remote roads and make crossings unsafe, while strong winds may cause trees and power lines to fall.
Bureau spokesperson Shenagh Gamble said that the system is being closely monitored by the Bureau and communities in the Top End should expect wet weather and strong winds.
"We are expecting widespread daily rainfall totals of around 50mm and a chance of more than 100mm in coastal locations.
"The Bureau has issued a Severe Weather Warning for the northern Arnhem district (northern coastline of the NT) for heavy rainfall and damaging winds, and a Flood Watch for river catchments across the Top End will be updated daily, as the heavy rainfall is expected to lead to river rises with potential for flooding.
Remember to know your weather, know your risk, and keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings using the BOM Weather app or the Bureau's website.
Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services have stood up an Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the preparation for and response to this event.
Regional Controller Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole said, "Residents who will be impacted by the heavy rainfall are encouraged to stay indoors. If you do not need to travel, please avoid using the roads until the wet weather has passed and it's safe to do so. This includes boat-goers, who should keep off the water until it's safe. And always remembers, if it's flooded, forget it!"
