Toodyay Police have charged a 26-year-old woman in relation to a series of incidents including driving at high speed through a COVID vehicle checkpoint in Morangup on Wednesday, 10 February 2021.
Around 6:15pm officers observed a silver Ford Falcon being driven at high speed, westbound on Toodyay Road, 3km east of the Morangup vehicle checkpoint. Police conducted a U-turn intending to intercept the vehicle, however, due to the high speed of the vehicle police were unable to make contact.
It will be alleged the driver continued at excessive speed along Toodyay Road before ploughing through the checkpoint on the wrong side of the road, narrowly avoiding checkpoint staff.
Police arrested the driver a short time later after the vehicle crashed into a metal roadside safety barrier.
A 26-year-old woman from Goomalling has been charged with:
- Steal Motor Vehicle and Drive Recklessly
- Stealing
- No Authority to Drive
- Exceed 0.08g Alcohol per 100ml of Blood
- Failed to Comply with a Direction
- Driver Fail to Stop – Property Damage
A 27-year-old man from Northam, who was a passenger in the vehicle has also been charged with one count of Steal Motor Vehicle.
At the time of the incident there were approximately 11 people at the checkpoint including police, Australian Defence Force officers and members of the public.
Both the 26-year-old woman and the 27-year-old man will appear in the Perth Magistrates' Court this morning, Thursday 11 February 2021.
