Mordialloc's beloved Horse sculpture restored and returned to its home on the foreshore
The iconic bronze Horse sculpture that was badly damaged by vandals in 2019, has been re-installed along the Mordialloc foreshore.
Artist Julia Squires travelled down from Sydney to oversee the return of the restored art work, that was originally installed at Mordialloc in 2009 and was inspired by the memories of racehorses being exercised in the water along the foreshore.
Ms. Squires said she was really looking forward to seeing the sculpture back in its home.
"The Sea Horse has become an iconic figure along the foreshore and I am grateful to the local community who have embraced its presence and protected it," said the artist.
Kingston Mayor Georgina Oxley said she was thrilled to see the sculpture finally re-installed.
"The Horse is a beloved part of the fabric of the foreshore and celebrates the rich history of the area which has seen some of the state's best racehorses take a dip in our beautiful bay."
The sculpture has undergone extensive repairs at a cost of around $6,500 by art restorer Peter Degaris, who sandblasted the bronze to remove all surface scratches and gave it a new patina and wax finish to remove all evidence of the vandalism and repairs.
While the sculpture has also been made more secure this time around, Council hopes this much-loved art work is looked after by the community, so it can remain a striking silhouette along the beach for years to come.
