More Charges Filed by Counterterrorism Team After Incident

Further charges have been laid in court today as the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) Sydney continues to investigate an incident at a shopping centre in Sydney's south last week.

Just after 2pm on Wednesday 24 July 2024, emergency services were called to a shopping centre on the Kingsway at Miranda, following reports of a man throwing bottles inside a bathroom on level one.

Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command attended and located several bottles, which were seized for further forensic examination.

Police established a number of crime scenes and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Shortly after, officers arrested a 21-year-old man nearby.

During a search of the man, police located and seized a knife, a bottle, and other items.

He was taken to Sutherland Police Station and charged. Those matters remain before the courts.

Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at a Loftus home seizing electronic devices, mobile phones and chemicals.

Following further investigations by the NSW JCTT and the analysis of seized items, an additional two Commonwealth offences will be laid at Sutherland Local Court today (Thursday 1 August 2024).

The charges include knowingly collect/make document connected with terrorism – S.101.5 Criminal Code and do act in preparation/planning for terrorist act – s 101.6(1) of the Criminal Code.

Police will allege in court that the man had mixed and unclear ideological beliefs.

The man remains on remand and is next due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 25 September 2024.

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team Sydney is comprised of members from the NSW Police Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and NSW Crime Commission.
