The Australian Government is continuing to support regions impacted by drought from across the nation today, announcing over $1 million in federal funding for 32 projects under the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal's award-winning Tackling Tough Times Together program.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the latest round of funding will enhance economic recovery and renewal following the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and effects of natural disasters faced by regional Australians.
"This funding is being delivered directly to grassroots, community-led initiatives to benefit local communities that have been hardest-hit," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
"These projects focus on reducing volunteer fatigue, fostering social connection, enhancing community identities, developing a greater ability to respond to community challenges and supporting the recovery of the local economy."
"I am pleased to see projects being funded across the country including in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia."
"While we've seen good rainfall in some areas of Australia, the impacts of drought are long-term and far-reaching, which is why it is vital this Government continues to back our regions to support a more secure and resilient Australia."
Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said a number of projects would deliver outcomes that boost community identity and sense of place, which is crucial for the wellbeing of Australia's rural and remote communities.
"I am pleased to see a wide range of projects being funded, including rejuvenating a community hub in Maryvale, Queensland, purchasing a community bus to facilitate social connectivity in Brinkworth, South Australia, and supporting a Centenary Celebrations community event in Red Cliffs, Victoria," Minister Littleproud said.
"This Government is providing over $11 billion from 2018-19 to assist farmers, regional businesses and communities experiencing drought and this is just one commitment that provides immediate support to those communities as they continue their recovery from drought."
"The Tackling Tough Times Together program is a rolling grants program and I encourage drought-affected communities to apply for the next open round of funding."
