More Land Available for Specialist Disability Accommodation

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is facilitating the delivery of more fit-for-purpose accessible housing to support Territorians with a disability.

Today, the Territory Government has released $1.64 million worth of land across seven sites, for registered Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) providers to develop into accessible housing blocks for people living with a disability.

These new SDA homes will provide housing for up to 20 people. The locations of these sites are:

· Two in Darwin's Northern suburbs;

· Two in Palmerston; and

· Three in Alice Springs.

SDA homes provide individuals living with disability, and have SDA in their NDIS package, with independent living arrangements, increased community connection and convenient access to informal supports for persons living with a disability.

The expression of interest is currently open, with grants of the land expected to be signed off in in May 2022 - ready for occupancy in 2023.

This is the Territory governments second land release for SDA, and continued work to support and provide fit for purpose housing for people living with disability. Earlier this year well established local and national organisations, Carpentaria Disability Services and Life Without Barriers, were awarded four parcels of land for SDA homes which will also be occupied by early 2023.

The EOI closes on 25 February 2022, visit grantsnt.nt.gov.au.

Quotes from Minister for Disabilities and Urban Housing, Kate Worden:

"We are proud to grow the Specialist Disability Accommodation sector, which provides life-changing support with greater housing and life choices for members of our community with disability.

"Earlier this year we released four parcels of land, now we are releasing another seven parcels of land. Territorians living with a disability want and deserve access to high quality services and to be able to participate in safe and vibrant communities.

"People with complex disabilities require a range of supports to ensure they can live as independently as possible, this is what the establishment of the new Specialist Disability Accommodation will accomplish."
