More motivation to drive up vaccination rates

City of Melbourne is incentivising Victorians to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and keep Melbourne open.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the campaign will kick off on radio first, followed by the chance to win a prize a day through social media, with a total prize pool valued at $100,000.

"We want to thank and reward Melburnians who have already been vaccinated, and provide those who haven't with a bit of extra motivation so the city can re-open and stay open," the Lord Mayor said.

"I want Melbourne to be the most vaccinated city in Australia because it is the only pathway to confidence."

The campaign is designed to motivate more people to get vaccinated with 10 x $5,000 Melbourne Experience packages up for grabs through a two-week radio promotion.

Part two of the campaign asks people to share their vaccine hero stories and what they're looking forward to when Melbourne opens up again, with the chance to win a prize valued at $1,000 every day for six weeks.

Prizes include:

  • $5,000 Melbourne experience packages for creating remarkable memories, including a $1,250 Emporium voucher, $1,000 Melbourne Central voucher, $250 Endota Spa voucher, $1,000 accommodation voucher, $500 dining voucher, and four Frozen the Musical tickets valued at $1,000.
  • $1,000 shopping vouchers for spending sprees at Melbourne Central, Emporium and the Queen Victoria Market.

The Australian Government last week said a vaccination rate of 80 per cent would be required to remove restrictions, stop lockdowns, and allow vaccinated Australians to leave the country.

"The vaccine is critical to protect ourselves and our most vulnerable from COVID-19, get back to the things we miss, see the people we love, and safely revitalise our economy," the Lord Mayor said.

The latest campaign designed to incentivise Melburnians to get the jab follows Council's vaccine hero campaign that launched last month.

The campaign is currently running throughout the municipality encouraging Melburnians to get vaccinated so we can all 'Melbourne on', including local advertisements in English, Arabic, Mandarin, Somali and Vietnamese.

City Activation Portfolio Lead Roshena Campbell said increasing vaccination rates is the most important thing we can all do to keep Melbourne open.

"More people vaccinated means greater protection for our loved ones and certainty for business owners and workers," Cr Campbell said.

The campaign will run for eight weeks, starting on 16 August.
