Untitled(2023), a colourful, abstract ensemble by artist Melinda Harper, is a recent acquisition for our Contemporary Art Collection.
The Art Acquisitions Advisory Committee recommended Untitled as it explores the possibilities of abstraction; a theme prevalent in the collection through predominantly male artists.
Harper's art reveals an unwavering commitment to abstraction. Working across a broad range of media, her work has been widely collected and is represented in public institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Melinda Harper (born 1965) is a key founding member of the artist-run space Store 5, which was based in Prahran, (from April 1989 to December 1993), one of the most influential artist-run-initiatives of its time.
Harper uses a hands-on approach, where painted coloured stripes and circular wooden forms move around like collaged elements until a final composition emerges.
In Untitled, this series of circles sitting on top of the stripes is created by the printed element carefully outlining each form and overlapping the vertical stripes beneath. The artwork consists of a colour screenprint, was printed at Troppo Studio and was purchased through Kaleidoscope Editions.
We invite you to discover and enjoy the beauty and cultural significance of our new art collection on display throughout our civic buildings, Council facilities, libraries and offices.
