The Allan Labor Government is delivering more homes for Victorians, with construction on almost 100 new social housing apartments now complete in Melbourne's south-east.
Minister for Housing Harriet Shing today visited a new social housing development in Mount Waverley, aimed at supporting women aged 55 over - the fastest growing group of people experiencing homelessness in Australia.
The $50 million project is a partnership between Homes Victoria and community housing agency National Affordable Housing Consortium and has delivered 96 new efficient and environmentally sustainable social housing homes.
With construction finished ahead of schedule, residents have now started moving into their new homes.
These new one, two and three-bedroom homes are modern and energy efficient, meaning renters will be able to save on their energy bills and stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The project has also been designed to cater to the over-55 cohort with features including mobility scooter parking.
The homes are close to are number of key services, including Syndal railway station, The Glen shopping centre, health services and parks, including Mount Waverley Reserve.
The homes at Mount Waverley are part of the Labor Government's record investment into social and affordable housing and created 450 local jobs during construction.
More than $6.3 billion is being invested through the Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund, with more than 10,000 homes underway or complete right across the state, and nearly 5,000 households are moving in or have moved into brand new homes.
When complete, this investment will deliver more than 13,300 new homes for Victorian families, with at least a quarter of these in rural and regional Victoria.
In City of Monash alone, more than $80 million has been invested through the Big Housing Build and other social housing programs to build 183 new social and affordable homes.
As stated by Minister for Housing Harriet Shing
"More homes mean more opportunity, including for older women who are particularly vulnerable to homelessness and poverty. This Mount Waverley development is already making a difference to residents by giving them secure, modern, and energy efficient homes that they can be proud of."
"Our record investment in social and affordable housing is providing homes for Victorians who need them while also creating thousands of local jobs."
As stated by Member for Ashwood Matt Fregon
"The Big Housing Build is transforming lives right here in Ashwood. These 96 new homes in Mount Waverley show how our record investment in social housing is delivering for Victorians, creating jobs, and supporting local families."
