More Tasmanians Encouraged to Get Active Locally

Nic Street, Minister for Local Government

Nine local councils will receive funding to improve public open spaces to get Tasmanians active.

The funding is part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government's Open Spaces Grant Program, administered by the Local Government Association of Tasmania.

Minister for Local Government, Nic Street, said the program's second round attracted significant interest.

"More than $2 million worth of funding has been awarded in Round 2," Minister Street said.

"Importantly, communities and councils in all regions of the state will benefit.

"Some of the projects have council co-funding. In whole, Round 2 projects will result in more than $6 million in infrastructure investment to support healthy and active communities."

The projects include developing community parks and playgrounds, upgrading multi-use and cycling tracks, upgrades to community swimming pools, upgrades to beach accesses, recreation ground change rooms upgrades, and establishing a dementia friendly garden.

Minister Street said our Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is all about helping more Tasmanians to get active within their local communities.

"Our local councils are doing a great job of providing facilities and open spaces to help cater for locals and these grants are all about helping them do that," Minister Street said.

"I thank Councils for their efforts in preparing high quality proposals for these community-focused projects."

Local Government Association of Tasmania president, Mayor Mick Tucker, said supporting communities were what these grants are for.

"Councils provide the critical infrastructure that supports the community to live active lives," Mayor Tucker said.

"The combined investment of councils and the State Government from this program will make a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of the communities involved".

Funding will be provided to the following Tasmanian Councils:

  • Break O'Day Council
  • Burnie City Council
  • Clarence City Council
  • Dorset Council
  • Kingborough Council
  • Northern Midlands Council
  • Sorell Council
  • Waratah/Wynyard Council
  • West Coast Council

The Tasmanian Government is committed to enhancing opportunity for all Tasmanians to gain the health and wellbeing benefits of active living, including participation in sport and all forms of outdoor recreation.

"The Program complements other initiatives, including the establishment of Active Tasmania, the creation of an Active 2030 strategy, and a separate Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program," Minister Street said.

"Councils across Tasmania provide the essential and much-loved infrastructure that keeps our communities healthy, active, and connected."
