Last year we asked our community what hours they'd like Unanderra Library to be open, and now we're responding to their feedback.
From Monday 28 April, Unanderra Library will be extending its morning open hours, giving the local community an additional five hours of library services each week.
The new hours will see the library open from 9.30am – 5pm on weekdays, and 9.30am – 1pm on Saturdays. This is a change from the previous opening time of 10am on weekdays, except Wednesdays when the library opened at 12.30pm.
"More than 170 submissions were made to our survey, and most of these people were regular visitors to Unanderra Library. There was general support for opening the library at 9.30am on weekdays due to convenience, consistency across libraries and opportunities for children's programs," said Wollongong City Council's Community Services Director, Kerry Hunt.
"We also appreciate the feedback we received from community members who wanted to share with Council their appreciation for the library's staff and the services offered through our libraries."
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the was a lot of passion in the community for Unanderra Library.
"Libraries are an essential part of Wollongong City Council's services, delivering more than 'just' amazing books, magazines and DVDs, but also providing social connections and delivering a range of lifelong learning programs,'' she said.
"I know Unanderra holds a special place in many people's hearts – it's a much-loved local community space.
"We've also recently completed some essential repairs and maintenance on the Unanderra Community Centre and Library building, and I'm delighted that the community will be able to enjoy using this great facility for more hours each week."
