The Glen site of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is proud to receive its third LEED Gold certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), marking a historic achievement in Quebec's healthcare network. This prestigious distinction, awarded by the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) to the MUHC and its partner, the McGill Health Infrastructure Group (GHIG), is valid for a period of three years and recognizes the performance and continuous improvement in the operation and maintenance of the building.
In comparison with similarly sized institutions located in comparable geographic areas, the Glen site stands out for its remarkable performance, particularly regarding its low greenhouse gas emissions and air quality. It achieved a perfect score (5/5) thanks to a ventilation system that ensures a constant renewal of air throughout its buildings. Initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint were also praised, achieving a score of 93% (15/16) thanks to a reduction in the use of fossil fuel-powered equipment.
Additionally, a survey on employees' transportation habits revealed that two thirds reported adopting sustainable mobility practices, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. This engagement demonstrates that environmental responsibility is not only a priority in the MUHC's activities, but is also deeply ingrained in its staff culture.
The LEED Gold certification (v4.1) also recognizes the concrete efforts made over the years to reduce the environmental impact of the facility, including the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, improved access to public transit and bike infrastructure, the development of green spaces, and the installation of a white roof to reduce heat island effects in the area.
"At the MUHC, we make sustainability an organizational priority. We know hospitals produce a significant volume of waste, so it is our duty to implement practices that will improve our ecological footprint to protect the planet and reduce our role in environmental factors that can affect people's health. This Gold LEED certification is a testament to the enthusiastic efforts of our teams and the collaboration of our partners."
Dr. Lucie Opatrny, President and Executive Director of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)
