Mullumbimby Rec Grounds to Get New Carpark, Public Toilets

A major upgrade of the carpark and at the Mullumbimby Recreation (rec) Grounds will start in late January.

The project includes:

  • Renewing the existing carpark and formalising 111 parking spaces including two accessible spaces.
  • 100m of new footpath to connect to the amenities block and bus stop area.
  • Improved drainage and minor landscaping.
  • Safe drop-off area on Byron Street near the historical entrance gates so vehicles can drop-off, pick-up and turn around.
  • Signage and line marking.

"The surface of the car park is badly in need of work as regular users of the rec grounds will attest to," Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said.

The project has a budget of $903,594 and is funded by the Australian and NSW Government's Community Assets Program.

The carpark near Byron Street will be closed for around five weeks while the project is underway and there will be minor lopping of some branches so machinery can move onto the site.

There will also be a major upgrade of the public toilets and the old "Little Athletics" building, to include change rooms thanks to an additional grant of $372,000 from the NSW Government's Sports Priority Needs Program.

With funding support from the Australian and NSW Governments, Council has completed a significant amount of work at the rec grounds following the 2022 floods including:

  • Upgrading the skate park access road
  • Renewing the six tennis courts
  • Resurfacing the netball courts
  • Renewing the cricket wicket and practice nets
  • Construction and fencing of two off leash dog areas.

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said works like these show the NSW Government's commitment to helping communities recover from the 2022 floods.

"Not only are these projects helping repair the damage caused by these events but they are helping to improve facilities so that they can best meet the needs of all members of the community now and into the future," Minister Kamper said.
