  • Multicultural Queensland Month kicks off today (1 August)
  • The month of learning, action and celebration will support and inspire efforts to continue building a more inclusive multicultural Queensland
  • Highlights include the LUMINOUS festival, the Multicultural Queensland Awards and free webinars

From Cape York to the south-east corner, Queenslanders are encouraged to embrace diversity and build belonging during Multicultural Queensland Month.

Throughout August, festivals, events and webinars featuring a cornucopia of cuisine, music, performances and conversations will present a unique opportunity to explore Queensland's cultural diversity.

The first major event will be Multicultural Australia's LUMINOUS festival on Saturday in Brisbane, proudly sponsored by the Miles Labor Government.

At dusk, the LUMINOUS lantern parade will send a message of welcome, connection and belonging to all Queenslanders.

Other highlights include a special exhibition at the Ekka that acknowledges Australian South Sea Islanders' contribution to Queensland's agricultural history.

Free webinars and panel discussions will also provide insights into different cultures and build understanding of how to create more inclusive communities.

A Multicultural Queensland Awards ceremony will be held on 23 August to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of Queenslanders who support and promote unity, harmony and inclusion.

As stated by Minister for Multicultural Affairs Charis Mullen:

"Multicultural Queensland Month is a wonderful way to embrace our diversity.

"The next four weeks will be full of activities, festivals and performances that showcase Queensland's rich cultural diversity and demonstrate how we celebrate and welcome all people.

"The month is an important part of our commitment to promoting unity, harmony and inclusion.

"Our diversity makes us stronger, and all of us have an active role in ensuring Queensland continues to be a welcoming and inclusive community for everyone."
