Department of Defence

The combined armed and defence forces of Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States will conduct a Maritime Cooperative Activity within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone on 28 September 2024.

The Maritime Cooperative Activity demonstrates our collective commitment to strengthen regional and international cooperation in support of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

HMAS Sydney and a Royal Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will operate with partner nations, enhancing cooperation and interoperability between our armed forces.

This activity will be conducted in a manner consistent with international law, and respecting safety of navigation and the rights and interests of other states.

Australia and our partners share a commitment to upholding the right to freedom of navigation and overflight, other lawful uses of the sea and international airspace, and other maritime rights under international law, particularly in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
