Mural Unveiling Commemorates 60 Years of Freedom Rides

Kempsey Shire Council

Last week, our community came together to commemorate a turning point in our shared history – the 60th Anniversary of the Freedom Ride.

The 1965 Freedom Ride —courageously led by Charlie Perkins and students from the University of Sydney—shone an unflinching light on the racial segregation and discrimination which was occurring at that time.

In reflecting on the past at the event, Mayor Kinne Ring stated:

"Today, as we honour the courage of those who challenged injustice, I acknowledge our past policies that contributed to racial segregation. Kempsey Shire Council is committed to walking together on this land, we commit to reconciliation and providing equity for all."

Commemorations for the event, presented by Learning the Macleay and Dhina Durriti Aboriginal Corporation, included the unveiling of a new mural on the wall outside the Kempsey pool.

Partially funded and supported by Kempsey Shire Council, the mural project was coordinated by Learning the Macleay and brought to life by local Dunghutti artist Jason Ridgeway. Jason worked with young people from across the Macleay Valley during last year's Yuwa Nyinda Dream Academy event.

Artist Jason Ridgeway shared the story of the mural, titled '60 Years of the Freedom Ride', explaining that the six meeting places included represent the 60 years of the Freedom Ride.

"The handprints depict our connection to country. Footprints make their way to the centre to commemorate the hard work of Uncle Charlie Perkins and his freedom ride group, to allow what we have as an Aboriginal community today. There are water holes representing our mighty river, and mountains above to represent our valley. The background with all the hands and different designs were created with students from our Dunghutti community."

We encourage the community to visit this stunning mural—a powerful tribute to the Freedom Ride and its lasting legacy.
