After an intensive search, a search committee at the Medical University of South Carolina has announced the appointment of Timothy L. Stemmler, Ph.D., a distinguished professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Wayne State University, as the new vice president for Research at MUSC, effective Feb. 1, 2025.
Stemmler is a biophysical chemist with over 25 years of experience at Wayne State University, where he held key leadership roles. He served as interim vice president for Research, associate dean for Research and director of Research in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His administrative expertise will be invaluable as MUSC accelerates its research initiatives and strengthens its position as South Carolina's premier biomedical research institution.
Chief Innovation Officer and search committee chair Jesse S. Goodwin, Ph.D., was impressed with Stemmler's focus on collaboration, faculty development and leadership."Dr. Stemmler possesses an impressive range of experience in both operational and strategic areas, which is exactly what MUSC needs in a leader to drive our research vision. Stemmler's research is internationally recognized, particularly his work on iron-sulfur biosynthesis to advance the understanding of protein functions in the genetic disease Friedreich's ataxia. His interdisciplinary approach has combined biochemical, biophysical, and structural tools, contributing significantly to scientific discovery and the training of future research leaders.
With consistent funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association, Stemmler's career reflects a substantial and lasting impact on the scientific community. His research collaborations span over 60 research groups worldwide, underscoring his ability to build meaningful partnerships and foster innovation across disciplines.
