2020 is gearing up to be an exciting year at Orange Regional Museum, with big changes happening within the display space and a line-up of fascinating exhibitions that will include something for everyone.
At the start of March we will farewell our first travelling exhibition Underworld: Mugshots from the Roaring Twenties from Sydney Living Museums. This hugely popular and fascinating exhibition was the first in a new program of temporary exhibitions the Museum is proud to host.
Over the rest of the month, the Museum will temporarily close its doors to allow for the changeover of exhibitions. When doors reopen on Friday 27 March for our next travelling exhibition from the Australian Museum, visitors will be greeted with a new layout in the Museum's exhibition space. Instead of one large gallery, the Museum will now have two exhibition spaces, separated by a modular wall system.
The division of the space will herald a new and exciting mode of exhibition delivery, giving the Museum greater flexibility and creativity in the use of the space and allowing us to host two exhibitions at the same time.
One gallery will be dedicated to hosting up to four temporary exhibitions every year, including some borrowed from museums across the county and some locally curated. This will bring a fresh program of exciting new ideas and stories, and a more in-depth examination of some of our local people, places, and events.
The other half of the reconfigured Museum will become a permanent gallery, which will host an exhibition exploring our local history for locals and visitors alike. With an emphasis on re-examining our well-known histories and uncovering new tales, the exhibition, titled Inherit: old and new histories, will open at the end of May.
Our first temporary exhibition in this redesigned space will launch at the end of March in time for FOOD Week. We would like to invite all members of the community to join us from 5pm on Friday 27 March to celebrate the opening of a brand new exhibition from the Australian Museum, Capturing Nature: early photography at the Australian Museum 1857-1893. The exhibition will be opened by curator Vanessa Finney of the Australian Museum.
