In a unique collaboration, musicians from Orange Regional Conservatorium will present a concert at Orange Regional Gallery in response to the current exhibition, Kuba Dorabialski: Crying.
The event will be held at 6pm on Friday 9 August.
This is the first of a series of performances as part of Music in Colour - a fundraising initiative of Friends of Orange Regional Gallery (FORG). The events aim to raise funds towards the purchase of artworks for the Gallery's permanent collection whilst also including performances by the Conservatorium in our Cultural Precinct ahead of their exciting relocation.
Orange City Council's Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell said we are lucky to have such talented musicians here in Orange, as well as a group of art lovers in FORG who are passionate about fostering art appreciation in our community.
"With the new $33 million Orange Regional Conservatorium and Planetarium being built right next door, I'm sure this partnership will continue in years to come."
The evening will begin with a short discussion of the film installation Crying, by the artist Kuba Dorabialski. The film presents a beautifully emotive story, shot in black and white in the Central West, of a Polish migrant trying to find connection, and beauty, in a foreign landscape. Kuba's imagery will form the backdrop to the musical performance. The musicians will also discuss their chosen pieces in response to the artwork. Audiences can expect to experience art and music merging in a unique sensory event.
Orange Regional Conservatorium Executive Director David Shaw said the musicians were taking every opportunity to immerse themselves in the city's cultural precinct ahead of the move from their current location in Hill Street.
"Performances in collaboration with the Orange Regional Gallery and FORG are one such step and represent an exciting venture to create multi-sensory concerts that extend and enhance interpretations of the Arts," Mr Shaw said.
"Combining visual arts and music together is an exciting opportunity to see how two very different approaches can result in a shared understanding. The dynamic nature of live music means that this event will only exist for the one night for the audiences that are present there to experience it."
FORG President Kathy Snowball said one of the key objectives of the group was raising funds to purchase works for the Gallery's permanent collection, which in turn helps enhance the visitors' experience.
"By hosting concerts in our beautiful gallery we will be merging the visual and musical arts. These concerts will not only showcase the talents of the musicians from the Conservatorium but also highlight and enrich the experience of the exhibition, ultimately fostering a deeper appreciation of both," she said.
"With the new Conservatorium being built in close proximity to the Gallery, these concerts are a first step in creating a cultural hub in Orange, allowing creativity to flourish and to further engage with the community."
Music in Colour will be held at 6pm on Friday 9 August.
