For the young people who call Carinity On Track home, Sammie McLardy is a nurturing and positive presence in their lives.
As Program Coordinator for the service, which houses 12 to 17-year-olds who are in the child safety system, Sammie ensures that everyone feels safe and welcome.

"We provide a structured, family-like environment for young people who, through no fault of their own, are unable to live with their parents or guardians," Sammie said.
"The individuals we care for have usually experienced trauma, neglect and abuse. We empower them to overcome complex behaviours and develop essential life skills.
"Our team is there on special occasions, as well as every day and night in between, ensuring that everyone feels valued and at home.
"We celebrate achievements and actively support hopes and dreams, fostering an environment where our young people can truly thrive."
Sammie's passion for helping others stems from her personal experience as a child longing for connection and validation.
"I left home myself at the tender age of 12 due to a difficult family situation. I was entirely alone, seeking refuge on the streets, at beaches, and in public restrooms," she said.

"The reality of not knowing where I would sleep or how I would find my next meal was a constant source of anxiety. I faced numerous challenges that tested my resilience and resourcefulness as I struggled to survive.
"Looking back, I realise how these experiences have informed my perspective on life and continue to influence my path moving forward."
Life changed for Sammie when she found herself in a shelter at age 15 and met a group of dedicated youth workers.
"I was struggling with loneliness and loss of faith and hope, and these youth workers profoundly impacted my life and instilled in me a sense of empowerment," she said.
"The word 'HELP!' can feel incredibly isolating when there's no one to hear your call, but these youth workers were there for me and helped me navigate my path.
"They saw beyond my circumstances and were the first to show me that there are good people in the world."

This encounter inspired Sammie to dedicate her life to helping young people experiencing similar challenges. She was recently recognised for this commitment through her nomination for two Livingstone Shire Australia Day Awards.
Sammie's personal life is kept busy with four beautiful boys, a husband and three amazing stepchildren. Professionally, she has volunteered for homeless services and worked in youth development, before joining Carinity On Track as a youth worker in 2020 and eventually leading the team.
"My experiences have shown me that having support and guidance from others is essential for genuine healing," she said.
"Just knowing that someone is there for you, someone who won't judge, can make a world of difference.
"My goal is to create lasting positive memories for our young people and provide a nurturing setting, so they are empowered to find their own solutions to the barriers they face. Central to my approach is ensuring that their voices are not only heard but also validated."

Carinity On Track is nestled on 10 acres of land on the Capricorn Coast. The team of on-site counsellors and youth workers are dedicated to supporting youth who are grappling with trauma-related behaviours and guiding them on how to express their emotions in more constructive ways.
"What I love most about my job is witnessing the growth of young people who have faced and overcome significant challenges," Sammie said.
"From daily routines, such as preparing for school and participating in cooking nights, to achieving milestones like reunifying with families or gaining independence, each success story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact we can have.
"Equally rewarding is watching my staff grow in their roles. Seeing them develop their skills, build meaningful connections with the young people, and embrace the challenges of this work is inspiring.
"The camaraderie and laughter among us reflect a true sense of family. It's a privilege to help build brighter futures and I am proud to be part of such a talented and compassionate team."
