Benalla Rural City Council, Benalla Health, and the Benalla Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group extend a warm invitation to the community to join in the NAIDOC Week celebrations for 2024.
This annual event commemorates the rich history, culture, and achievements of Australia's First Nations people. Under the theme "Keep The Fire Burning," this year's celebration promises an enriching experience for all.
Aunty Cheryl Cooper, a respected local Aboriginal artist, shared her excitement as preparations for the event come together: "Our NAIDOC Week event in Benalla is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet! With a host of activities for the kids including a colouring-in competition, information stalls for families and adults, plus live music, it's a fantastic opportunity for the Benalla community to come together."
Benalla Rural City Mayor, Cr Danny Claridge, echoed the sentiment, "NAIDOC Week is a fantastic event on our Rural City's calendar. I'm particularly looking forward to the array of children's activities that will teach our young people about our nation's rich First Nations culture."

Event Details:
Flag Raising Ceremony 10am: The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flag Raising Ceremony will take place at the Benalla Civic Centre (13 Mair Street, Benalla).
Smoking Ceremony 11am: Across the lake at the Benalla Lakeside Community Centre (accessed via Arundel Street), a powerful Smoking Ceremony awaits. Rooted in Aboriginal culture, this ritual cleanses the spirit and heals the land.
Engaging Activities for Children: Following the Smoking Ceremony, the Benalla Lakeside Community Centre will host art and craft sessions. Younger generations can learn about First Nations Culture and express their creativity.
Cultural Heritage Displays: Explore exhibits showcasing the contributions and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the region.
Services information: A host of services will have information stalls for people to access important details about what services are offered in our local community.
