NAPLAN Results Consistent in Literacy, Numeracy

Minister for Education and Minister for Youth Justice The Honourable Di Farmer
  • Queensland's 2024 NAPLAN results show over 60% of students achieved "strong" or "exceeding" proficiency in reading and numeracy
  • This is consistent with 2023 results
  • The Queensland Government continues to prioritise providing support for students who are developing or need additional support.

Queensland school students' 2024 NAPLAN results have remained consistent with 2023, with over 60% achieving a level of "strong" or "exceeding" proficiency in reading and numeracy.

Preliminary NAPLAN results were provided to schools in April, and final results provided in June, which has allowed teachers and school leaders to use the results to inform learning and support needs in their classrooms.

Report card data is still the most powerful data schools have about student performance and they tell us how well students are learning in relation to the Australian Curriculum and what we need to do to support them to achieve their full potential.

Queensland has a strong focus on English and Mathematics and have seen improvements in A–E outcomes across every year level including Semester 1 preliminary data showing more than 85% of students achieve a C and above in English and with almost 50% excelling receiving an A or B.

The Miles Government is prioritising funding support for students who are developing or need additional supports including investing in:

  • $35m over 3 years from 2023 to implement a new reading commitment which supports a consistent evidence-informed approach to teaching reading across all state schools
  • $23m each year provided directly to schools based on need for literacy and numeracy supports
  • More than 1,100 specialist learning support staff and 500 specialists like speech and language pathologists allocated to regions and schools
  • $4.9 million over 2 years for 120 Homework Centres at state school with on-site support for students to complete homework outside of school hours.

The 2023 NAPLAN set a new baseline across four new improved proficiency levels, meaning 2023 and 2024 results cannot be compared with those from 2022 or earlier.

As stated by Education Minister Di Farmer:

"NAPLAN is simply a point in time measure of student progress."

"Our teachers, teacher aides and school leaders work every day to support every student to achieve their best.

"The NAPLAN results help us to make sure we are investing in the right areas to support students with developing or additional needs.

"I encourage all parents and carers to review their child's NAPLAN results in conjunction with their report cards and teacher feedback, and work with their school to explore extra support available where needed."
