The Hawkesbury community will gather for the National Day of Healing - Sorry Day on Thursday, 26 May 2022 at 11am at Governor Phillip Park, Windsor.
The first National Sorry Day was observed in 1998, a year after the 'Bringing Them Home' report was brought before the Australian Parliament. This report details the hardships undergone by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children that were forcibly removed from their families as part of official government policy; these children are now referred to as the Stolen Generations.
The National Day of Healing calls on Australians to reflect upon the mistakes of the past, learn more about current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and show a commitment towards reconciliation. This year the Aboriginal community is hosting the National Day of Healing ceremony in the Hawkesbury.
