More than 5,000 surf lifesavers from around the nation are set to make a splash across Perth's iconic beaches as the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships return to Western Australia in 2022.
The highly anticipated Championships - nicknamed The Aussies - will be held from April 2-10, 2022 at Scarborough, Trigg and Secret Harbour beaches.
Supported by the McGowan Government, through Tourism WA, the world's largest Surf Life Saving event has the potential to attract more than 8,000 competitors, visitors, spectators and support crew to WA and boost businesses through visitor spend.
Western Australia last hosted the event in April 2018 at Scarborough and Trigg beaches, generating about $15.8 million, nearly 69,000 visitor nights and bringing in more than 8,500 interstate and international visitors.
The main events of the 2022 event will be held at Scarborough beach, with beach sprints and relays at Trigg and board riding at Secret Harbour.
Adding to the action will be the Aussies festival zone in Scarborough, which will include food trucks, swimwear retailers and activities for families.
More than 80,000 followers of Surf Life Saving Australia's Facebook page will also be able to view the action at Western Australia's renowned beaches via a livestream of the event, which will also include promotion of the State.
The Aussies consists of more than 480 beach and ocean events, and brings together members from 315 Australian surf clubs.
As stated by Tourism Minister David Templeman:
"It's exciting to welcome these championships back to Scarborough, Trigg and Secret Harbour beaches, all of which are great locations from which locals and visitors can soak up the sun and the action.
"The Scarborough foreshore area has undergone a transformation over the past few years to include family-friendly spaces to complement the area's stunning coast.
"With plenty of accommodation options, as well as a variety of cafés, restaurants and bars close to the foreshore, the location is ideal for hosting Aussies competitors and fans alike, who will be boosting our economy by supporting these businesses."
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Tony Buti:
"Events like these bring the surf lifesaving community together and provide athletes an
opportunity to showcase their skills across the range of surf sport disciplines.
"Surf lifesaving clubs are an integral part of Australian beach culture by keeping beachgoers safe, educating children and providing a recreational outlet for all ages.
"There are more than 22,000 members who participate in surf lifesaving across 31 different clubs throughout Western Australia."
As stated by Scarborough MLA Stuart Aubrey:
"Scarborough has some of the best beaches in Western Australia and I can't think of a better place to host the 2022 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
"As a surf life saver at the Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club, I have seen how hard these athletes train and I am excited to watch them and the other national competitors right here in Scarborough."
