MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Ngo, a Mechanicsburg native and lead data engineer for Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC), received the 2021 Department of the Navy (DON) Information Technology (IT) Excellence Data Award from the DON Chief Information Officer (CIO), May 24.
The award recognized Ngo's outstanding performance of duty and leadership during a two-year data integration project.
"You have ensured that legacy system's data quality is preserved, but also improved accuracy while streamlining data-integration processes for future source systems," stated Aaron Weis, DON CIO, in an award citation to Ngo. "By enabling data transparency, increasing data quality, understandability, interoperability, and accessibility, you have affected and enabled a 'data as an asset' construct, provided cross-platform data availability and advanced analytics capabilities, enriched supply chain compliance reporting, and improved day-to-day decision-making."
The data project consolidated multiple business intelligence solutions within the Navy Data Platform, creating an environment aligned to the Navy's data-centric vision.
Navy Data Platform is a standardized business intelligence and data platform, designed to improve data-driven decision-making at strategic and tactical levels by establishing and optimizing business processes that increase readiness through access to data and self-service analytics. It harnesses data from different Navy systems, brings the data together, and makes it available to analyze quickly in various ways. It can provide reports, dashboards, and in-depth predictive analysis that can identify supply-chain issues preemptively.
"I'm truly honored by the award but my teammates are the ones that truly deserve the credit and recognition," said Ngo. "I didn't accomplish this alone. The team accomplished this, and the award is for them. I'm thrilled their hard work is being recognized at the Department of the Navy level."
Ngo's 2021 DON IT Excellence Data Award marks the third year in a row that IT specialists at NAVSUP BSC have been recognized for excellence by the Navy.
In 2020, their 57-person Navy Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Tech Refresh Team received the DON Information Management/Information Technology Team Excellence Award for migrating Navy ERP from an onsite-hosted service to a commercial cloud service in record time. In 2019, Laura Sedor, also a Mechanicsburg native, received the DON Cyberspace/Information Technology Person of the Year Award for developing the NAVSUP Office of the Inspector General portal.
"I'm extremely proud of Ngo and the entire NAVSUP BSC team," said Capt. Gene Cash, commanding officer, NAVSUP BSC. "Their tireless, innovative accomplishments continue to improve and strengthen business operations by enabling leaders to make informed data-driven decisions that increase readiness and lethality for the Navy."
NAVSUP BSC provides the Navy with information systems support through the design, development, and maintenance of systems in the functional areas of logistics, supply chain management, transportation, finance, and accounting and is one of 11 commands under Commander, NAVSUP.
