Nepal Trains Human Rights Officers on Labour Rights

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is excited to organize a transformative Training of Trainers (ToT) aimed at empowering officers of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal. This three-day event, taking place from 18-20 September 2024, in Kathmandu, will enhance the capacity of 31 NHRC officers from the seven provinces and Kathmandu to champion and safeguard fundamental labour rights across Nepal.

Why this matters: Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (FPRW) are the foundation of fair and just societies. They ensure that every worker enjoys basic rights and protections, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive world. Strengthening the NHRC's ability to uphold these principles is crucial for advancing human rights in the workplace.

ILO Country Director Numan Özcan stated, "Labour rights are human rights and both as ILO and NHRC have a role and responsibility to promote them. Therefore, this training on fundamental principles and rights at work will be crucial in advancing labour rights as human rights in Nepal by strengthening the capacity of the officials of the NHRC." He added that this training marks an important milestone for a long-lasting cooperation and collaboration between ILO Nepal and NHRC.

Workshop highlights:

  • Interactive Learning: Participants will engage in dynamic group exercises, discussions, and experiential learning activities led by international experts.
  • Real-World Impact: The training will equip NHRC officers with the skills to address pressing issues such as forced labour, informal employment, and occupational safety and health.
  • Diverse Perspectives: The workshop will celebrate and leverage the diverse backgrounds and experiences of participants, fostering a rich learning environment.

This initiative is organized in cooperation with the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin (ITC/ILO) through its International Labour Standards, Rights at Work and Gender Equality Programme (ISLGEN). It is supported financially and technically by the ILO Country Office for Nepal.

By participating in this workshop, NHRC officers will not only enhance their own capabilities but also contribute to a broader movement for labour rights as human rights in Nepal. This training is a step towards a future where every worker's rights are respected and protected.

The Secretary of NHRC Mr Murari Prasad Kharel added, "This training highlights how we can work in future basically on fundamental principles and rights at work. NHRC has been working in the labour issue from the very beginning and hopefully after this training we will learn about the ILO principles, conventions, labour rights and decent environment at work. It will also lead us on how NHRC can intervene in labour issues and rights at work in future. It is the beginning of the collaboration with ILO and NHRC and working together for the protection and promotion of labour rights and making government and other stakeholders accountable."
