The Tasmanian Government has reached a new agreement with the Volunteer Ambulance Officers Association of Tasmania (VAOAT) to support the attraction, retention and training of ambulance volunteers.
Under a new Memorandum of Understanding between VAOAT and Ambulance Tasmania, the volunteer body will receive $50,000 funding to procure equipment for the training and support of Volunteer Ambulance Officers (VAOs) across the State, and for general promotion of volunteering opportunities.
Minister for Health, Jacquie Petrusma, said the agreement delivered on an important commitment from the 2024 State Election and would support VAOs with the amazing and valued work they do across the Tasmanian health system.
"Volunteer Ambulance Officers make an extraordinary contribution to their local communities, working side by side with paramedics across the State to provide life-saving care to those who need it," Minister Petrusma said.
"This new Memorandum of Understanding will ensure our volunteers continue to have access to the training and development opportunities they need to provide the best care possible.
"Using this funding from the Tasmanian Government, Ambulance Tasmania and the Volunteer Ambulance Officers Association of Tasmania will work together to ensure our volunteers are equipped with modern training devices and operational equipment.
"Funding will also be utilised for promoting the Association's work and recruitment of volunteers.
"I want to sincerely thank all our volunteers for your service and dedication to our community – we are deeply grateful for the sacrifices you make in your personal lives to be available for emergency calls, and your unwavering commitment to helping those in need.
"I would also like to thank the Association's President and Board Members for their role in representing Volunteer Ambulance Officers and for their valuable contribution in developing this MOU."
Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we are continuing our efforts to recruit even more dedicated healthcare workers, who alongside our volunteers, will enable Tasmanians to access the healthcare that they deserve.
