The VBA will increase the frequency of inspections related to bedding materials. Practitioners should be well prepared and ensure all bedding materials used on-site are compliant with the relevant standards.
Practitioners should keep copies of delivery dockets and National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)-accredited test reports for the bedding material.
Improved bedding material compliance process
VBA inspectors will employ a more structured and data-driven approach when evaluating bedding materials on-site. This includes verifying materials against the referenced standards, with an emphasis on objective documentation.
If the bedding material appears non-compliant during inspection, practitioners are required to provide supporting documentation, such as delivery dockets and NATA-accredited test reports, demonstrating that the bedding material meets AS/NZS 2566.2 standard, Table G2 or G3.
If any required information is missing from a NATA test report or delivery docket, a supplementary compliance statement from the plumber will be necessary to confirm the material meets AS 2566.2 standard for the specific project.
Alternatively, plumbers may source and install other bedding materials that satisfy the compliance standard.
Standards for bedding material size and testing requirements
As per AS/NZS 3500.2, Cl 5.4.2 (a), crushed rock, gravel screenings or similar recycled materials should have a nominal size between 7 mm and 10 mm (inclusive). Tables G2 and G3 of AS/NZS 2566.2 indicate the acceptable size limits for bedding materials to confirm compliance. NATA-accredited test reports should include:
- Sample identification with details on size, source and supplier
- Recent dates (within six months preferred)
- Test methods, sample procedures and applicable Australian standards (e.g. AS/NZS 2566.1 Table G2)
- Laboratory details and signatory.
