New Biosecurity Funding & Expenditure Report Debuts

Dept of Agriculture

As part of the 2023-24 Budget, the Australian Government committed to providing greater transparency and accountability in biosecurity funding and expenditure with the annual publication of a Biosecurity Funding and Expenditure Report.

On 30 October, the inaugural report was published as an appendix to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's Annual Report. A standalone version is also available on our website. This report covers the 2023-24 financial year.

The report marks the first time that more detailed information on biosecurity finances has been made available to the public, offering more comprehensive data than existing departmental reports such as the Portfolio Budget Statements and corporate plans.

In addition to providing transparency and accountability of biosecurity funding and expenditure, the report also highlights the programs of biosecurity work we are delivering and shows how funds are being used (and will be used in the future).

The report was consulted through the Sustainable Biosecurity Funding Advisory Panel.

Going forward, we will publish the report annually, following the end of each financial year, to ensure ongoing transparency and accountability in biosecurity funding and expenditure. Future reports will evolve and mature. At a more granular level, we will show progress against our strategic priorities in the DAFF Biosecurity 2030 Roadmap and our contribution to implementing the National Biosecurity Strategy.
