If you've been turned off by red, white or rose, perhaps this brightly-coloured tipple is more your thing
A new wine has been launched that hopes to lure in new drinkers - and it's bright BLUE.
The tipple is a blend of red and white wine, and is aimed at younger non-wine drinkers who might be put off by wine snobbery.
Following decades of red and white ruling the scene, rose wine has become a pub hit in the last few years with sales soaring of the chilled and highly drinkable beverage.
But now the makers of Gik think that blue wine is the next step.
Gik's website explains that wine culture shouldn't be exclusive: "We do not believe in wine tasting rules and we don't think that anybody should need to study the bible of enology to enjoy a glass of wine," they say.
The blend has 11.5% ABV and it's dye that gives it its recognisable hue, but it's all natural.
Gik is made from grapes grown in vineyards near Madrid, including the La Rioja, León, and Castilla-La Mancha regions.
The colouring is from a pigment which occurs in grape skin - anthocyanin - along with indigo, a dye extracted from plants.
The sweetness comes from an additive - calorie-free sweetener - and it's said to be flavoured like a reisling - a sweet white that's served chilled.
It's been created by a team of young people with no wine tradition and, the company explains, it was "born for fun... To shake things up a little and see what happens."
After finding success inside Spain, Gik is launching in the rest of Europe this summer, priced around £7.50 per bottle.
They're also inviting interested businesses to get in touch, so blue wine may be seen in a bar near you soon.
