Strict new border measures for arrivals to the NT will come into effect from 00:01am tomorrow Monday, 9th August.
The Chief Health Officer today declared tough new measures that will see people who are at greater risk of having COVID-19 refused entry to the Territory.
Under the new direction, anyone who has been in a current declared COVID-19 hotspot or public exposure site in the 14-days prior to their planned arrival in the NT cannot enter unless they are a returning Territorian (with proof of residency), are in an automatic approval category or have been granted an exemption to enter.
The online Border Entry Form – which everyone entering the NT must complete - now requires people that have been in a hot spot to show that they have an approved exemption before travel to the NT is approved.
A new 'Approval to enter the Northern Territory' exemption form has been created and is additional to the current Border Entry Form.
There are strict categories of people who can apply for an exemption including people entering the Territory to begin residence, escaping domestic violence; undertaking active Australian military official duties, maintaining or repairing power, water, communications or other critical infrastructure and for a compassionate purpose.
People arriving from a hot spot or public exposure site without approval will be turned around and may be subject to a fine. If approved by the CHO, they must still undertake 14-days mandatory supervised quarantine at their own expense or meet rigorous conditions required by the CHO to prevent transmission of infection to the NT community.
Returning Territorians are not required to complete the 'Approval to enter the Northern Territory' exemption form if they have been in a hotspot or public exposure site but must still prove they are Territory residents and must still undertake the 14-day quarantine period.
Interstate travel during this global pandemic has always been a risk for Territorians. If you travel now, you risk not being able to return, or having to undertake 14 days of mandatory supervised quarantine at your own cost.
