New buildings set to open in major job-creating Balcatta Senior High School redevelopment

  • $50 million redevelopment well underway at Balcatta Senior High School
  • Local jobs created as first new buildings completed
  • Remaining works due to finish next year
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery visited Balcatta Senior High School today to view new classrooms and specialist facilities, part of a multimillion-dollar capital works project that has helped to create local jobs.

The State Government has invested $50 million to redevelop the 53-year-old school and create modern learning spaces for students and staff.

The project has been designed by Hassell Architects, with construction by PS Structures.

A new technologies building and cafeteria were finished in April 2020.

More recently completed works include a multistorey building with a sports hall, fitness centre, performing arts spaces, administration facilities, new staff areas, science laboratories, general classrooms and amenities. This new building will open to students and staff from the beginning of Term 4 this year.

Further works including new hard courts and a swimming pool refurbishment will be completed for the start of school in 2021.

The project also includes refurbishment of heritage classrooms and facilities for an education support centre for up to 50 students. This is due for completion by the beginning of the 2021 school year.

Final external works will be finished by April 2021.

The Balcatta Senior High School redevelopment is part of the State Government's investment of $452.8 million (2019-20 financial year) to improve infrastructure in WA public schools.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"The State Government is committed to providing Western Australian children and young people with the best possible learning spaces and opportunities to thrive at school.

"The major redevelopment of an older school such as Balcatta Senior High School provides students with these opportunities.

"It is just one example of hundreds of projects we are delivering around the State to provide new or enhanced classrooms and facilities at Western Australian public schools."

As stated by Balcatta MLA David Michael:

"The redeveloped Balcatta Senior High School will give local students better opportunities for learning in state-of-the-art facilities.

"Local Balcatta based PS Structures completed the building works supporting many Western Australian jobs throughout the construction.

"As a lifelong local, I am proud to deliver on my election commitment to upgrade Balcatta Senior High School."
