- Design released for $4 million universal access fishing platform in Bunbury

The Cook Government today released the design for the planned $4 million universal access fishing platform to be built following the construction of the new northern breakwater at Casuarina Boat Harbour in Bunbury.
To be located on the northern side about one-third along the 460-metre breakwater currently under construction, the platform will be positioned adjacent to a special precinct to be developed on the breakwater supporting the needs of users, carers and visitors.
The platform, measuring approximately 25 metres in length, will include 10 wheelchair bays, seating, sun and wind shelters and lighting for evening fishing.
An elevated gangway will link the platform to the adjacent landscaped precinct where there will be universal access toilets and a changing facility for people with disability, superlong universal access parking for maxi-taxis with rear wheelchair loading ramps, bus parking and special areas for coffee and food vans to operate from.
While the design of the breakwater fishing precinct is continuing, detailed planning for the platform has commenced. It is envisaged the platform and adjacent precinct will be ready for use in 2027.
The centrepiece of the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront (TBW) project, the $69.2 million breakwater will create sheltered harbour waters, underpinning the rejuvenation of the harbour as a regional hub for the marine industry and delivering a significant community asset.
Harbour manager and delivery agency, the Department of Transport, is working closely with lead agency the South West Development Commission to build the new breakwater and together they have engaged with a range of peak organisations, State and local authorities to ensure the design of the platform meets the requirements of all users.
