The latest recruit to the ranks of Tasmania's cadet stipendiary stewards has been announced.
Ms Mel McCarthy will take up cadetship in the Tasmanian racing industry as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said the Government's Cadet Stewards program is an essential strategy for ensuring we have skilled and capable stewards to support the racing industry in Tasmania into the future.
"The Cadet Steward program ensures cadets are sufficiently experienced to be competitive when permanent steward positions become available at the Office of Racing integrity," Minister Howlett said.
"As a cadet, Ms McCarthy will work with more senior stewards undertaking office duties, routine inspections and race day duties focusing on one of the racing codes for three-month periods in order to consolidate her learning and experience.
"It is vital that our stewards continue to have the skills and knowledge required to maintain the rules and integrity of racing."
The Cadet Stewards will transition from ORI to Tasracing as part of the new racing regulation and integrity reform framework.
"We will continue to invest in workforce renewal through the successful Cadet Stewards program with funding of $250,000 per year," Minister Howlett said.
"As Racing Minister, I want to rebuild trust and restore faith in racing across all three codes, to see them thrive, and ensuring we have skilled and capable stewards to support the industry into the future is an important part of that."
