From Wednesday 2 October 2024, the grace period for Darwin households to make alternative arrangements in order to comply with limits of two roosters and 20 chickens per household will cease.
Last year, City of Darwin released new By-laws that included new livestock rules, including limiting the number of roosters and chickens that can be kept in suburban households.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said a 12-month transitional arrangement had been in place to provide enough time for alternative arrangements for roosters and chickens to be made.
"The By-laws were created after the biggest review of By-laws in the past 30 years and after considerable community consultation," Mr Vatskalis said.
"One of the new By-laws that was introduced was a limit on the number of chickens and roosters that can be kept in residential homes.
"Now that the transitional period is over, this By-law will start being enforced by our rangers.
"The limit on chickens and roosters is for the wellbeing of the animals, as well as to reduce noise to neighbouring properties," he said.
Eligible households are considered as land that is zoned as Rural Living (RL), single dwellings of 600m2 or greater or community gardens or schools.
