A new garbage compactor is improving safety and efficiency at Corangamite Regional Landfill.
The 52-tonne TANA H520 Compactor cost $1.75 million after the $176,000 trade-in on the old compactor, and is expected to operate for 1500-2000 hours a year for at least eight years.
Acting Manager Environment and Emergency Belinda Bennett said the specialised machine enables Council to efficiently manage waste and comply with EPA regulations.
"The new vehicle ensures waste material is properly compacted, to ensure the safety and stability of landfill cells as they are filled," she said.
"Compaction maximises the amount of waste that can go into the Landfill and leaves minimal airspace."
The compactor has a fire suppression system which is vital given an increasing number of battery fires.
"I can't stress enough that batteries and rechargeables need to go into eWaste which is a free service at all Council transfer stations.
"We strongly encourage residents to think about what they're putting in their landfill bin and separate eWaste to help keep everybody safe."
