The new ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) Cash-back Depot at Mitchell is now open, making it faster and easier to return eligible drink containers.
The depot has moved to a bigger and better location from its previous location on Buckland Street and features new automated counting systems which quickly count drink containers and provide customers with an instant cash refund.
"The fresh new depot is great news for the northside community. It is the third depot operating in the ACT and the second location to offer the automated counting systems that speed up the return process, enabling cash refunds on the spot," said Janelle Neath, Acting CEO of Exchange for Change, scheme coordinator of the ACT CDS.
The new depot features three automated counting systems, like the ones recently installed at the Phillip Depot. The systems use automatic sorting technology which more than halves the time customers spend returning containers. It also provides residents with access to a variety of return options to suit their needs.
"We usually see a large volume of returns during the holidays so the opening of the new depot ahead of the Christmas break is timely as it will help reduce processing wait times," said Ms Neath.
Since the ACT CDS began on 30 June 2018, over 43.3 million containers have been returned through the Scheme, more than 20 return points across the ACT opened, and the new Return-It Collect mobile service launched.
"It's now easier than ever before to take part. I encourage all ACT residents to make 2020 the year they embrace the smart way to recycle drink containers through the ACT CDS, helping the environment and the community while being rewarded for your efforts," Ms Neath added.
The new Mitchell depot is located at 83 Grimwade street, Mitchell. It is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm on Saturday and 9am to 3pm on Sunday.
All return points are open over the Christmas break except for Christmas Day.
