New Cultural Garden And Mural Brings Community Together

Kempsey Shire Council

A vibrant new Cultural Garden and mural have been unveiled at Kempsey Library, creating a space for learning, connection, and creativity while celebrating Indigenous culture and fostering community participation.

The project features a colourful mural led by Dunghutti artist Jason Ridgeway, alongside a thoughtfully curated garden of native bush tucker species. Together, they offer visitors an engaging way to connect with the natural and cultural significance of the area.

With a vision to enhance the library precinct and provide meaningful opportunities for youth, this collaborative project focused on empowering young people through hands-on learning, creativity and community involvement. It also provided a valuable opportunity for cultural sharing with the younger generation.

The Botanic Gardens of Sydney's Community Greening Outreach Program played a key role, offering expert guidance on gardening and cultural knowledge about the native plants featured in the garden.

To further enhance the garden's educational value, signage providing information about the native plant species and their traditional uses is being developed and will be installed in 2025.

"This project is about so much more than a garden or a mural—it's about bringing people together, fostering respect and understanding, and creating a lasting legacy of cultural connection," said Aisha Spokes, Community Projects Officer.

Mrs. Spokes also emphasised the importance of youth involvement: "Engaging our youth in projects like this is absolutely vital. It's a way to empower them with knowledge, inspire their creativity, and instil a sense of pride in their community. By celebrating our rich Indigenous history and traditions, we are not only honouring the past but also ensuring that it thrives in the future."

A strong partnership with Essential Energy also contributed to the project's success. Infrastructure within the garden was transformed with the vibrant mural, completed under strict safety and approval processes. This collaboration not only discourages graffiti but also enhances the visual appeal of the space, demonstrating how partnerships can create positive outcomes for the community.

We invite everyone to visit the new Cultural Garden and mural at Kempsey Library. This beautiful space is a testament to the incredible place we call home—where culture, history, and community come together.

This project proudly acknowledges the land of the Dunghutti people, whose culture and traditions continue to enrich our community.
