New Director to Boost Housing, Transport, Jobs in Illawarra

New Property Council Director to Push for Housing, Transport, and Jobs in the Illawarra Shoalhaven

The Property Council of Australia has appointed Matthew Wales as its new Illawarra Shoalhaven Regional Director, tasked with driving key policy and advocacy priorities in one of NSW's fastest-growing regions.

Mr Wales is a former advisor to the Federal Treasury and the Hong Kong Government, and most recently led on taxation and foreign investment for the Property Council's Capital Markets Division.

He steps into the role at a critical time, as the Illawarra Shoalhaven grapples with housing affordability, transport constraints, and the need for major infrastructure investment.

"With significant population growth and economic expansion in the region, we need the right infrastructure, housing, and transport solutions to support our communities and businesses," Mr Wales said.

"A key focus will be unlocking new housing opportunities and keeping planning and investment in step with demand. Major projects like the Nowra Riverfront Precinct and the Wollongong CBD revitalisation will be central to shaping the region's future", he said.

Mr Wales flagged transport connections as another key barrier to growth.

"We need more frequent train and bus services within the Illawarra Shoalhaven, as well as a business case for a direct link to Western Sydney, and roads upgrades to better connect the region with the new Western Sydney International Airport and Aerotropolis.

"Improved public transport services and stronger transport links to Greater Sydney will be a game-changer for local businesses, workers, and residents," he said.

Mr Wales said it was vital that government policy and investment align with industry needs to support economic growth in the region.

"The expansion of Port Kembla is another top priority - the BlueScope Port Kembla Master Plan is set to transform the area into an industrial hub with the potential to create 30,000 jobs," he said.

Property Council NSW Division Council member Tracy Preston of Wollongong-based MMJ Real Estate welcomed Mr Wales' appointment.

"Mattthew's leadership, networks, and experience will be invaluable in his work with Property Council members and stakeholders to drive economic growth and advocate for the housing and transport reforms the region urgently needs," Ms Preston said.
