In pawsome news for dogs – and their owners – Nillumbik's newest off-leash dog park in Eltham North is now open.
The park, which is located in Wattletree Road just behind the Eltham Men's Shed, is completely fenced and provides a safe area with plenty of room for dogs to run and play off-leash.
There is a separate fenced area for smaller or quiet dogs, and other features of the park include rocks and logs to clamber and climb, drinking fountains, a shelter and seating.
The park has been made possible with $275,000 from the Victorian Government through the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's Suburban Parks Program and $450,000 from Council.
Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said Nillumbik residents loved their dogs, with the number of registered dogs in the Shire growing over the past few years, particularly since COVID-19.
"We now have more than 10,000 registered dogs in the Shire. So it's really important to provide them with a safe space to run free, play with other dogs and develop their social skills," Cr Eyre said.
"And owners, too, appreciate a place to take their pets and meet with other dog owners close to home.
"I would like to thank Eltham MP Vicki Ward and the Victorian Government for their support in developing this park, which has been greatly anticipated in our community."
Edendale Ward Councillor Natalie Duffy said the new dog park would be a very popular addition to the precinct.
"The park is a convenient walk from the Diamond Creek Trail and will provide a dedicated space apart from the local sports ovals," Cr Duffy said.
"I thank everyone for their patience as we have completed the works."
Coming out of winter, parts of the park are wet and so areas have been mulched and rotating sections will be cordoned off as the weather gets warmer to allow the grass to grow.
To ensure the park is enjoyable for all we have a few tips for visitors:
- Ensure your dog is under constant supervision and voice control
- Please clean up after your dog – bags and a bin are provided
- Keep this park for the dogs – there are other nearby parks and sports grounds for other games and activities
- Children must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
- Parking on site is limited, walking is the best way to get there – and your pet will love it
- Further parking is available at the Eltham North Reserve, please walk around the oval rather than through the adventure playground with your pet.
