Keen mountain bike riders looking for their next adventure can now experience 50km of new trails in the East Gippsland high country, supported by a $1 million investment from the Allan Labor Government.
Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney today announced the opening of the first stage of the Omeo Mountain Bike Park, which is set to become a major drawcard as one of Australia's best mountain biking destinations.
There are more than 20 runs nestled in the foothills of the Mount Sam State Forest. These are perfect for beginners and advanced riders, featuring a mix of cross country, downhill and jump runs for those who love some airtime.
Riders on the downhill trails can enjoy the scenic high-country views as they descend into Livingstone Park, and cross-country trail riders can take in the sights of the Oriental Claims historic area, Dry Gully and Livingstone Creek.
With the trails converging on Livingstone Park, stage one of the project also included a new BBQ area, bike wash and maintenance facilities, and a pump track for young riders to build their skills.
Supported by Regional Development Victoria, the new trails are a welcome addition to the suite of premier mountain bike parks throughout Gippsland, including Haunted Hills in the Latrobe Valley and Blores Hill at Heyfield.
With Omeo being the gateway to the ski fields at Mount Hotham, the trails will be another reason to visit the region all year round.
The first 50km forms part of a two-stage project that will deliver over 100km of trails once complete, creating one of the biggest mountain bike parks in Australia. Construction of stage two is underway, with the Labor Government providing a further $3.1 million in support through the Regional Tourism Investment Fund.
East Gippsland Shire Council is delivering the project, with expert trail builders Common Ground leading the construction. The project has also received $3 million from the Australian Government.
The Labor Government's support for this project is part of our record $45 billion investment since 2014 in projects that support every corner of Victoria to be an even better place to live, work, stay and play.
