Kempsey will soon be able to boast its third electric vehicle (EV) charger, to be located at the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery in South Kempsey. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the NSW Government to boost EV infrastructure across regional NSW by investing $20 million to help eligible businesses and Councils co-fund the purchase and installation of EV chargers.
Under the program, the grant covers 75% of the cost of the EV charger, installation, and the first-year software subscription. For Kempsey Shire Council, this means that the project will only cost $3,345 after the grant, covering the installation, signage, and preparation of a road base surface. The new charger will be similar to the Ocular tower units already installed at the Slim Dusty Centre and Back Creek in South West Rocks.
The benefits of this new charger installation extend beyond just providing convenience to existing EV owners. It will encourage more visitors to the Kempsey Shire by attracting EV drivers who need to recharge. Additionally, with more charging stations available, it will send a clear message to non-EV drivers that sustainable transport is growing, making the transition to electric vehicles more feasible and appealing.
This installation will also position Kempsey Shire Council as a leader in sustainability, with the potential to participate in the NSW Government's 'EV Tourist Drives' initiative, further boosting local tourism and showcasing the area as an eco-friendly destination.
