Directed by filmmaker Nicolas Garier, Paris 2024 Social Charter - The Gamble of the Games!, delves into the The Social's unique, inclusive and wide-ranging social economic and environmental approach to delivering the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Inspired by the international labour standards, there are 16 commitments which, together, create a range from guarantees of employees' working conditions, wider and more diverse recruitment parameters, and opening procurement processes to smaller businesses. The Charter was signed by representatives of the Olympic organizers and Employers and Workers organizations.
"This film shows how important it is to recognize the social dimension of international sports events like the Olympics and build on the opportunities they offer to initiate long-lasting, positive change," said Cyril Cosme, Director of the ILO Office in Paris. "Whether it is respect and promotion of fundamental rights, the importance of including small businesses in procurement opportunities, or the opportunities these events bring to integrate disadvantaged groups into decent work - including young people, women and minorities. Commitments like these ensure that the games will have a really valuable and long-lasting legacy, in France and beyond."
The documentary, looks at the unique package of social commitments that the Paris organizers adopted, covering the entire event delivery process. It is a living testimony to how ILO constituents can make the Olympics a vehicle for decent work and people's livelihoods.
An earlier film, Paris 2024 Social Charter, 1919-2019: the genesis, released in 2020, looked at the background to the Social Charter. Funded by the ILO, this film recalled the historical links between the Olympic movement and the ILO since the 1920s. It was presented in Paris and Geneva as part of the celebration of the centenary of the ILO.
