The Allan Labor Government has updated the design for the Progress Street level crossing closure to include a new pedestrian footpath - further improving safety and access to local businesses in Dandenong.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson today announced a new Fowler Road footpath will connect to the road bridge over Eumemmering Creek and existing footpaths in the area following feedback.
Works are continuing on the road bridge which will allow the Progress Street level crossing to be closed and the Pakenham Line to be level crossing free in 2025.
The new footpath will be built on the south side of Fowler Road to improve access and safety - while the South Gippsland Highway intersection will be signalised to cut congestion.
Parking will be indented on Fowler Road, which will increase the road's width to further improve safety and accessibility for all road users.
The Greater Dandenong City Council will deliver the new footpath following the completion of the project.
Project works will occur in stages to minimise disruption, with the project team continuing to work closely with businesses throughout construction.
By removing eight level crossings in the Greater Dandenong area, journeys will be safer for all road users and almost six hours of boom gate down time will be slashed each morning.
The Labor Government has removed 84 level crossings, with 110 going for good by 2030, boosting safety and easing congestion.
As stated by Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson
"The level crossing at Progress Street will soon be gone for good, bringing the Pakenham Line one step closer to becoming level crossing free."
As stated by Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams
