New Footpath Funding Welcomed

Orange Council

Two grants totalling $549,000 for building new footpaths in Orange have been welcomed as a major boost to the city's active travel network.

PATH: A grassy area alongside Ploughmans Lane is on track for a new footpath, following a NSW government grant.

Orange City Council has been awarded the grants from the NSW Government's Get NSW Active program.

The grants will be used to build:

  • a new 530-metre long shared pedestrian/cycle path on the eastern side of Ploughmans Lane, between Escort Way and Coronation Drive
  • a new 1-kilometre long footpath on the northern side of Matthews Ave, between Burrendong Way and Hill Street

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison believes the Orange community will benefit greatly from this investment.

"I'm thrilled that more than half of the projects successful in this year's round of funding is going to regional NSW to provide active transport options for local communities to enjoy," Jenny Aitchison said.

"It's this type of infrastructure that makes our communities happier and healthier."

"There is a strong movement towards active transport corridors in our regional communities and it's great to be part of a government which is funding the development and delivery of infrastructure to envisage this."

Orange City Council's Infrastructure Committee chair, Cr Jack Evans, has welcomed the news of the successful grants.

"Orange already has a fantastic network of shared paths that connect key locations around the city," Cr Evans said.

"These paths are designed to be used by both pedestrians and cyclists. These paths let young children or experienced cyclists travel around our city safely away from busy car traffic."

"The new path on Ploughmans Lane will be 3 metres wide and extend the existing path by another five hundred metres, past Riawinna Oval all the way to Coronation Drive.

"Mathews Avenue is a busy street when it comes to traffic. This new 1.8-metre-wide footpath from Burrendong Way to Hill Street will allow pedestrians including those pushing a pram to walk safely and conveniently."

"Council is pleased to be working in partnership with the State Government to deliver this important infrastructure."
