The Palaszczuk Government will continue to invest in revitalising one of the jewels in Gold Coast's tourism destination crown, The Spit, Main Beach.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles said the Queensland Government will be investing $26.8 million over the next four years to deliver ongoing community focused infrastructure projects for The Spit.
"We've been investing in the area since 2017 with the preparation of The Spit Master Plan, extensive community consultation and the delivery of projects such as the iconic Seaway Promenade," Mr Miles said.
"The Spit is one of Queensland's best public spaces, preserving it and improving it is vital to our plan on promoting and improving the Gold Coast's world class lifestyle."
Some of the projects chosen to commence in 2023 includes:
- Construction of upgraded boat ramps, car and trailer parking and public amenities at Muriel Henchman Park
- Roll-out of the first stage of Wayfinding and Interpretive Signage
- Planning for the revitalisation of Doug Jennings Park.
Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the investment would continue to boost tourism and improve access for locals.
"Our government has already invested significantly in the Spit, funding projects like the Marine Stadium Jetty and Pontoon currently under construction," Ms Scanlon said.
"New projects include upgrading facilities at Muriel Henchman Park, installing new Wayfinding and Interpretive Signage and planning for future upgrades
"These projects will enhance livability and access to the waterways for Gold Coasters whilst supporting tourism and local jobs in the process."
The Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is a key partner in The Spit Master Plan's implementation. CEO Chris Derksema said the State's continuous funding support for these works marks an exciting era for The Spit.
Mr Derksema stated, "community feedback about these projects has been really positive and we're building upon our approach by preserving existing elements as much as possible, while improving access, amenity and environmental outcomes."
"We're keen to embark on the design phase for the revitalisation of Doug Jennings Park, which is one of the largest open recreational spaces in the region,
"It's a stunning coastal parkland that offers a range of active and relaxed cultural and social opportunities to so many people and the upcoming works aim to further enhance those experiences."
"We will work closely with the community, as we have done through the Master Plan process, to deliver something special for locals and visitors alike." Mr Derksema said.
