- $2 million Cook Government investment to commence planning for a new indoor sporting facility in Perth's inner southern suburbs
- New facility will cater to hard-court sports, including netball, basketball and volleyball
- Part of the Cook Labor Government's commitment to doing what is right for the people of Western Australia
Planning for a new indoor sporting facility in Perth's inner southern suburbs will begin in the next few months, thanks to a $2 million investment by the Cook Labor Government.
The new facility, to be located in Perth's inner southern corridor, will cater to a range of popular sporting codes including basketball, netball and volleyball.
The funding will go towards assessing various locations and design options for the facility, including the number of courts and other complementary features.
The decision to provide funding towards planning for a new facility follows a strong advocacy campaign by local members of Parliament, including Member for Victoria Park Hannah Beazley, Member for South Perth Geoff Baker and Member for Belmont Cassie Rowe.
The campaign highlighted demand from community sporting clubs for a modern indoor facility with the capacity to cater for the growth in popularity of a range of sporting codes for many years to come.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:
"There is high demand for indoor sporting facilities in Perth's inner southern corridor, with thousands of children and young people enrolling in local clubs every year.
"The Cook Labor Government is a strong supporter of community sports and has been investing heavily in local sporting infrastructure over the past seven years.
"This $2 million in funding to begin planning for a new indoor facility will ensure that the future sporting needs of the inner southern suburbs are catered for.
"I would like to thank local members Hannah Beazley, Geoff Baker and Cassie Rowe among others for raising this issue with me and advocating so strongly for their communities."
Comments attributed to Victoria Park MLA Hannah Beazley:
"I'm delighted that the Cook Labor Government is listening to our local community and investing this funding.
"It is fantastic that so many more kids and young people are playing sports and keeping healthy, but this also puts pressure on local clubs and facilities.
"This commitment will ensure that the future needs of the community are well catered for. It's such an incredibly positive announcement."
As stated by Belmont MLA Cassie Rowe:
"This is fantastic news for everyone involved in volleyball, netball and basketball living in the inner southern suburbs.
"We all know the need is there and it is great that the Cook Labor Government has come to the party with this planning money."
As stated by South Perth MLA Geoff Baker:
"South Perth families have been raising this issue with me for some time - we need more hard courts in the area.
"This $2 million in planning money is a wonderful start."
