New Investigation Into Maternity Ward At RHH

Tasmanian Government

A rapid investigation will be conducted into maternity services at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), following a number of concerns raised by the ANMF and past and current staff.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said the safety of mothers and babies is of paramount importance.

"The claims made by nurses and midwives through the ANMF and the media are very serious, and while the Department has undertaken an initial review of rosters and has not uncovered any issues, I will instruct a further independent examination.

"The investigation will closely examine the issues raised, including safe rostering practices and patient safety at the RHH maternity ward, with an appropriate independent person to be appointed shortly following further consultation with the ANMF.

"I can assure the community that we will do everything possible to ensure Tasmanian mothers and babies are getting the healthcare they expect and deserve."
